Richard and Tupper Hawley's Cross Gallery features Raku and Copper Mosaic Art. Raku is a clay firing process, Japanese in origin. The word means "simple pleasure, joy and beauty." Raku is unlike other ceramic processes because of its unpredictability. Instead of being heated and then cooled very slowly, Raku works are plunged quite suddenly into a hot kiln, removed when they reach a glowing red heat, and then buried abruptly in a pit of soil and other organic materials. The materials are burned into the vessel’s hot surface to create spontaneous design and texture. Visit Cross Gallery's site for more info.

Raised on the reservation of Santa Clara Pueblo, Jeff now lives approx. 12 mi. north of the pueblo near the town of Ojo Caliente, New Mexico. a true traditional potter, in the Tafoya family manner, Jeff developed his own, absolutely unique, contemporary style. Utilizing his sculpting abilities, his love for animals, and his spiritual beliefs, Jeff sculpts animal figures on lids of his pots and/or animal busts which protrude from the pots themselves. He works with various animals including the eagle, buffalo, elk, deer, wolf, cougar, wild turkey, and horses, all which carry special spiritual connection to Jeff. Jeff's pieces are made using only traditional methods and materials including his sculpted contemporary pottery.

I worked for them when I lived in NM. The etchings are from small copper plates, and the images are wonderful southwestern moments. The landscape and architecture that is captured, truly a gift from the past.

Great Site! This site has been around for a while. It moved July '08 from a small to a large ISP. The site will undergo a face lift as well as an upgrade to a new engine to 'run' the back end of it.
