One of the few northern New Mexico style, late Spanish Colonial period "Great Houses" remaining in the American Southwest. Built in 1804, the Hacienda has twenty-one rooms surrounding two courtyards. La Hacienda de los Martinez is one of the few remaining examples of a restored northern New Mexico style, Spanish Colonial period hacienda open to the public. This massive adobe casa mayor, or great house, was constructed sometime shortly after 1804, by Antonio Severino Martin (later to become Martinez). The casa mayor that Martinez built became the first permanent, year-round mercantile operation in Taos.
In 1927 renowned Russian artist Nicolai Fechin [1881-1955] began building his new home here in Taos, New Mexico. Today the home and his studio stand as landmarks symbolizing the colorful history of art in Taos. The home and studio are filled with Fechin's woodcarvings of ornately carved doors, doorways and cabinets. Taos became an artist's "mecca" and home to the Taos Society of Arts. The Fechin home is on the National Register of Historic Places and the home and studio are the home of the Taos Art Museum. The Taos Art Museum is located in front of the Fechin Inn, two blocks from the Taos Plaza. Following the arrival of the this initial group of artists, the Taos area has grown to become a renowned international art market and artists' community. It is presently estimated that there are more artists, per capita, in the Taos area then in any other city in the world, including Paris France.
This Web site is for Taos Historic Museums, a 'not for profit' organization. Under the blue skies of this northern New Mexico community, a rich and colorful history of a multi-cultural people was formed. La Hacienda de Los Martinez (Marinez Hacienda), built in 1804 was an important trading center at the northern boundary of the Spanish Empire. Ernest L. Blumenschein, of the famous Taos Society of Artists, and his family, lived in a home purchased in 1919, within walls dating to an early Taos fortification of 1797. In a community rich with history, these two historic homes will give you a glimpse of Taos' past. "Holding in trust the cultural heritage of northern New Mexico".

I worked for them when I lived in NM. The etchings are from small copper plates, and the images are wonderful southwestern moments. The landscape and architecture that is captured, truly a gift from the past.

Great Site! This site has been around for a while. It moved July '08 from a small to a large ISP. The site will undergo a face lift as well as an upgrade to a new engine to 'run' the back end of it.
